A supposed ‘sting operation’ carried out by some Excise personnel on a pharmacy turned into blackmail and extortion in Dimapur Saturday. A Excise personnel went to a pharmacy at around 8 a.m. and asked for codeine, a banned cough syrup sold only under prescription. Initially the pharmacist said it was not available after which the excise personnel produced his identify card showing ‘Excise Office’ which led the salesman to presume he was a police officer. Thinking a police officer would not abuse the substance, the salesman sold the syrup. Thereupon, the exciseman called on some of his colleagues and took the salesman to a hotel opposite Hotel Tragopan. There, they blackmailed the salesman and asked to be paid Rs.One lakh. The harassed salesman called up home after which his sister brought Rs.30,000. Thereafter, the salesman was released along with fifty bottles of codeine. Police are investigating the case.
