Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary and former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma Saturday said the party has given full authority to chief minister Neiphiu Rio to choose a candidate for the DAN coalition in Nagaland for the coming Lok Sabha election. “In the coming Lok Sabha election, DAN will have a consensus candidate and Rio will be authorized to choose his own candidate and NCP will give full support,” Sangma told mediapersons here on the sidelines of his meeting with NCP Nagaland State leaders and workers. He also said he was happy with the performance of DAN government and lauded Rio for “very successfully managing the coalition.” “We are very close and in touch with each other,” Sangma added. On the other hand, the NCP leader blamed both the previous NDA government and present UPA government for failing to bring in any substantial development in Nagaland during the ceasefire period. Sangma said as Speaker of the Lok Sabha during the time when the process of ceasefire was initiated with the NSCN (I-M) under the prime ministership of Deve Gowda and IK Gujral, he too had been actively involved in the process. “Today it is more than a decade since cease fire agreement was agreed upon with the central government’s slogan ‘peace for development.’ And so I had expected a lot of development in Nagaland,” he said. Sangma said ten years was a long period wherein Government of India had the opportunity of proving the “difference of peace time” and convincing the people of Nagaland what peace could bring. He said it was unfortunate that both the then NDA government and present UPA government had failed to show the difference between “insurgency time and peace time” in terms of development.
