Five persons, including two women were killed and 43 others were injured, some critically, in Meghalaya’s Sohryngkham village when a bus in which they were travelling fell into a deep gorge at around 2: 30 am on Tuesday. The ill-fated bus (ML 09 3696) of Network travels was enroute from Guwahati to Silchar when its brake failed and rammed on to a parked truck (AS 01Y 0016) and later plunged into a gorge. Eyewitness said the impact of the accident was so severe that it tore the bus into two halves. “The bus was having problems with the brake system and we asked the driver to stop the bus and repair it. The driver however went on,” one of the injured passenger Hari Singh claimed. Passengers of the bus further claimed that the driver who is now absconding, was in an ‘inebriated condition’ when the accident occurred. A single dead body, that of one Kalpana Rajbongshi (30) from Simalbari, Baksa, Assam has been identified so far. Meanwhile, some of the injured persons have been admitted in city civil hospital. Police are investigating to find out the exact cause of the accident.
