MDFA tourney kicks off: DMC chief reminds of legendary Dr. T Ao’s feats

The MDFA Trophy 2008 kick started Tuesday here at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, with chairman, Dimapur Municipal Council, Khekaho Assumi gracing the inaugural as the chief guest. The chief guest in his address stressed on the significance of the football ground on which the tournament was being played, and said the hallowed ground had produced the greatest Naga footballer Dr. T Ao who also captained the first India football team in the Olympics. Lamenting the present state of affairs of the youth, Khekaho called upon the youth to emulate the likes of late Dr. T Ao and bring honour and fame to the society. Stating that as per the latest census, seventy percent of India’s population was below the age of thirty, the DMC chairperson said every effort should me made to tap the talents of the youth and to “catch them young” in whatever field they excelled. Encouraging all players to play in the true sportsman spirit, he also urged the players to strive to compete in the national as well as international levels. The DMC chairperson also donated Rs. 1 lakh towards prize money and Rs. 50,000 to the MDFA. Meanwhile, the DMC chairperson also appealed to the people of Mokokchung to provide at least one nominee from the Sumi community in the Mokokchung civic body, stating that Sumis constituted the second largest community in Mokokchung after the Aos.
