Assam wins NEEPCO badminton

Assam shuttlers made clean sweep in the inter-state North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Badminton Championship. The three-day championship was concluded here yesterday where a 27-member State team, selected by the Assam Badminton Association, took part. The Assam shuttlers won all the team titles in the meet with thumping victories against the other state teams of the North-eastern region. Naga shuttler, Joseph Sumi was adjudged as the top badminton although he lost in the final. In the men’s final Assam got the better of Nagaland 3-1. Suranjan Bhubora put Assam ahead with a 19-21, 21-17, 21-12 victory against Alivoker. But Nagaland drew parity through Joseph Sumi who beat Anirban Chetia 22-20, 21-14. However, Assam clinched the title taking the next two matches. In the doubles Suranjan, pairing with Dibjyoti Bora, defeated Nagaland duo Joseph and Raju 21-18, 11-21, 21-18. Anshuman Hazarika confirmed Assam’s victory by clinching the third singles against Tajen Kaba 21-13, 21-16. The Assamese women also made a cakewalk against Nagaland as Bibari Basumatary trounced Bandang Naro 21-12, 21-10 while Anjali Kalita and Kristi Das pair won the doubles match against Uma Tamang and Ekumyala 21-15, 21-5. They need not to play the second singles. In the boys and girls sections also Assam had facile victories against Manipur. In the boys final, Nikhilesh Sharma downed W James in the singles while in the doubles Nikhilesh and Anshuman Bora defeated RK Cinir-W James duo 21-15, 21-15. The State girls also defeated their Manipuri counterpart by an identical margin. Kaberi Phukan won the first singles against Ksh Khelpati devi 21-14, 21-5 while in doubles Kaberi and Monmeet Srikant combined well to earn a comfortable 21-9, 21-11 victory against Khelpati and L Rebika.
