Imphal shops close to protest extortion

Hundreds of shops at the RIMS road, Imphal shuttered Saturday and shopkeepers and salesmen staged sit-in protest against huge monetary demand imposed on them by a rebel group. Around 100 shops situated on both side of the stretch of the RIMS road connecting Imphal city with Regional Institute of Medical Sciences or RIMS, Lamphel received hard pressures from KYKL outfit to pay them Rs. 30,000 each as party fund, according to the shopkeepers staging protest in front of their shops today. The sit-in protest which started from around 9.30 am went on till around 3 pm and many slogan denouncing imposition of money as “annual tax” on them without taking into account the incomes of the shops were displayed during the protest. To mention here, this is not the first of its kind in which shopkeepers on the sides of the main roads in the city were imposed monetary demands by various militant outfits. In the recent time also, shops along the Tidim road had protested against the monetary demand.
