Amid the lurking shadows of terror blasts that have rocked several parts of the country and the September 13 blasts in New Delh, the Indian International Trade Fair 2008 being held at Pragati Maidan, attracted several thousand people on Sunday. Pavilions of the north eastern states attracted less enthusiasm than that of other states such Delhi. Nagaland’s pavilion evinced general interest but judging by the number of crowd in comparison with other pavilions, there was nothing to crow about. As the evening wore on, Nagaland Pavilion staged an acoustic music presented by Mayang. Other states such as Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Delhi and Orissa were able to put up attractive pavilions and stalls with various items that were popular with the local crowd. According to some visitors who spoke to this Correspondent, Nagaland pavilion as with other pavilions of the north east, somehow have not come out of the ‘cultural aspect’ in a fast changing world. What could be understood from the views expressed by some visitors is that North Eastern states like Nagaland needed to put up more than the usual showcase of cultural dance or attire and focus on other commercially viable aspects. Some visitors said north eastern states need to come out of their ‘cultural shells’ and venture into promotion of indigenous organically grown and packed food items that are much in demand in the international market. The handicrafts from Nagaland, though attracting some interested buyers also needed much attention, like synergizing the shapes and symbols with modern tastes. This needed much better finishing otherwise; the items stand little chance with other international buyers. Naga food items also were quite popular though much needed to be pondered over in the light of the advent of fast food items that have found world wide appeal. All in all, the IITF provides opportunities for making contacts and being able to cater to the needs of the market.
