3 militants killed in Manipur

At least three militants were killed in the interior Chandel district early Monday by security forces and recovered arms and ammunitions from them, official said. Security force has claimed recovery of three weapons: two AK-56 rifles along with four magazines, one M-20 rifle and 206 rounds of AK-56 ammunitions. The three militants believed to belong to the rebel group UNLF were killed in an ambush laid by the troops of 38 Assam Rifles at Aijang village this early morning at around 3.30 am, police said. The village is located some 20 km south of Chakpikarong police station of Chandel district. Troops of Assam Rifles having a close watch on the movement of the rebels in the nearby jungles of the Aijang village laid the ambush when intercepted with a group of well armed militants moving there, an official of the state police said. After a brief exchange of fire, the troops killed three of them while others made a good escape taking advantage of the thick jungle of the area, the official added. Further search operations in the area were in progress till late afternoon to trace out the escaping militants, the report added. The Army and Assam Rifles have been countering with Manipur insurgents in the interior areas of Chandel district bordering Myanmar with more intensified forms since the last around three years.
