Domestic help, a form of child labour

A seminar on sensitization for Tracking of Child Labour organized by Labour Department was held on Wednesday at Longkumer Kilem, Mokokchung with Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung, Bendangkokba as chief guest. Delivering his speech, the DC quoted "Man is born free, but is chained everywhere" due to various discrimination that is prevailing in our society. He admitted that "we still have certain evil practices" and said that this was due to ignorance and or negligence. He stressed that 'child labour is not observed outwardly', but it can be witnessed in many households in the form of 'domestic helpers/servants' and added that this practice should not be encouraged, but rather make an effort to provide them decent education. Expressing his concern, the DC said that Child Labour has become a 'serious problem' in the state and called upon all that through the program to help eliminate Child Labour from the district. Earlier in the programme, welcome address was delivered by chairperson Longritemjen Ao, labour officer. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and child welfare was presented by Y. Lanutemjen, District Education Officer Mokokchung and child welfare with special reference to juvenile justice act by T. Imkong Longkumer, district welfare Mokokchung and 'child labour- abolition & prohibition' by Imlisashi Jamir, assistant labour commissioner Mokokchung; 'labour department on child labour- a highlight', by Chubayanger Aier, Project Officer JLC Office Nagaland Kohima. The seminar was attended by various NGOs, students and members of Christian youths.
