Chaga Gadi festival celebrated in Kohima, Dimapur

Minister for planning and coordination, veterinary and animal husbandry, evaluation and parliamentary affairs, T.R. Zeliang Friday said that it was time a common festival evolved to indoctrinate a sense of brotherhood and oneness before people alienate each other. Stating that Nagas were going through a very crucial period “caught between nationalism, factionalism, tribalism” he said that festivals are an occasion to refresh oneself. Speaking at the Chaga Gadi festival of Liangmais at The Heritage, T.R. Zeliang appealed to gathering to strive for peace and social harmony out of the festivity, stating that the festival should be a platform to develop peaceful and cordial relationships with one another to facilitate speedy development. He said that preservation of culture had become a need of the day to maintain ones unique identity and set the rich culture into the mounting global tourism industries. “Culture like ours has become a resource pool for revenue and income generation by making our land an attractive tourism destination” he said. He also urged the people to harvest their cultural and traditional potentials which he said would make their land a tourist destination. He further added that the DAN Government was giving all efforts to promote activities and programmes to bring development to the state and improve the living standard of the people. Special highlights of the festival included songs and dances, cultural show, indigenous games and feast. N.Azu Newmai spoke on the significance of Chaga Gadi; while N. Benjamin Newmai chaired the programme. A post harvest thanksgiving festival, the Liangmais celebrates Chaga Gadi in honour of womenfolk for their prominent contributions in sustaining the family. Meanwhile, ‘Chaga Gadi’, the festival of sanctification of the Liangmais was celebrated by Liangmai community of Dimapur with pomp and gaiety Friday here at the Tenyimi Complex. Deputy chairperson, Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), DP Angami who graced the celebration as the chief guest called upon the festive gathering to strive towards promoting and preserving the rich customs and beliefs of Naga forefather to bring about oneness among the present generation. He also appealed for peace and unity so that every community could co-exist harmoniously in Dimapur. Considering himself part of the Liangmai family, which is also an integral part of the Tenyimi community, Angami sought cooperation in creating a beautiful Dimapur for posterity. President, Naga Council Dimapur, Savi Liegise who was one of the guests of honour, in his address said the world was presently in turmoil and even Naga society had not been spared from the clutches of evils. He therefore called upon the Liangmai community to al so share the responsibility of building a better society and world. Manipur MLA Awangbou, who was also a guest of honour, highlighted on the tremendous transformation that had taken place in the Naga culture with the advent of Christianity whereby many good qualities of “our forefather are forgotten.” Awangbou said losing one’s culture would ultimately lead to lose of identity. Songs, traditional dances and feasting marked the first “Chaga Gadi” celebration organized by Liangmai Aruang Dimapur. (Staff Reporter)
