For the first time in the state, dental implant an artificial tooth root replacement was performed on a patient by Dr. Kamlesh Kothari, MDS, DNB, Fello- Implantology Oral and Maxillo- facial surgeon, Calcutta. The dental implant surgery was demonstrated live at Royal dental clinic, Dimapur Friday. Dr. Kamlesh Kothari, who is also the director of Dental World, said “Implants are a well-established, tried-and-tested treatment. 90 per cent of modern implants last for at least 15 years. You can have any number of teeth replaced with implants – from one single tooth to a complete set. It depends on the state of the bone in your jaw. Although dental implant treatment may initially be slightly expensive than other treatment methods it often turns out to be the best investment from a long term perspective since most patients can expect them to last a life time. Other treatment methods like bridges and dentures often require regular alterations and adjustments over time.” The full procedure costs up to Rs. 20- 35 thousand depending on the quality, he said. A typical implant consists of a commercially pure titanium screw (resembling a tooth root) with a roughened or smooth surface which is embedded into the jaw bone and to which replacement teeth are attached. According to Dr Kothari the material is absolutely compatible with the tissues of the body; therefore the body does not reject them. He said implants could provide support for improved appearance, speech, comfort, and chewing ability. It is used to support one or more false teeth and to support natural looking teeth and enable patients who are missing some or all of their natural teeth to smile, speak with confidence, avoid socially embarrassing situations and chew their food more comfortably. “With advancements in instrument design, dental implants art placed in a key-hole procedure lasts only 5 minutes. This is very comfortable for the patient and there is no restriction to any activity. With computer guided surgery, it’s also possible to give a tooth in one hour only!!” adds Dr. Kothari. Present at the live surgery demonstration were dentist from Kohima and Dimapur. First of its kind in state, dental implant was organised by the Indian Dental Association Nagaland State Branch.
