In yet another incident of dowry harassment by in-laws, a 22-year-old woman was beaten up and allegedly forced to consume phenyl in Chander Nagar near Krishna Nagar in east Delhi on Friday evening, reports Times News Network. The victim, Deepa Verma, is now recovering at the Hedgewar Hospital and is reportedly out of danger. The doctors at the hospital, however, refused to confirm the nature of the toxic substance used to poison her. The incident comes to light a day after a 25-year-old man and his parents were arrested in Nangloi for allegedly killing his wife for dowry. The police, meanwhile, have registered a case of dowry harassment at the Krishna Nagar police station and an inquiry has been set up. Deepa lives in a joint family with her husband and daughter Tanya. According to the police, Deepa had an argument with her sister-in-law around 8.45 pm. Within minutes, however, the matter snowballed into a scuffle in which Deepa was beaten up. She was also allegedly forced to consume phenyl by her in-laws, including her father-in-law. Deepa’s husband, Sanjay Verma, was away at work in his cosmetic shop at Krishna Nagar when the incident took place. A police officer said, “An inquiry has been put in place and relevant action will be taken after it is complete.’’ Deepa’s family, meanwhile, have alleged that their daughter was being harassed ever since her marriage in December 2004. The victim’s mother, Uma Kataria (48), even claimed to have seen Deepa’s sister-in-law beat her up in front of her eyes on Friday. Deepa’s parents reached her in-laws’ residence at 9 pm after their daughter informed them about the incident. Speaking to Times City from the hospital bed, Deepa said, “My two-and-a-half-year-old daughter had spoiled my sister-in-law’s cream following which they started abusing me. I am regularly tortured by my in-laws for not bringing enough dowry. But on Friday, things just reached an extreme when they tried poisoning me.’’ Deepa also alleged that her husband had forced her to sign a paper claiming his family would not be responsible in case of a mishap with Deepa. Stressing their daughter had been tortured from the very beginning, Uma Kataria said, “Just two months after the marriage my daughter was given sleeping pills by her in-laws. She could not even wake up for three days. Getting beaten up for little things had been a regular affair. We have been tolerating everything with a hope that things would improve.’’ Uma added, “On quite a few occasions our daughter came to our place. But fearing social stigma, we always settled for a compromise and she returned to her in-laws. However, this time we don’t know what to do.’’ Expressing his concern, Deepa’s brother Ajay Kataria (25) said, “We had spent almost Rs 10 lakh on my sister’s wedding. Even when my niece was born we had given her in-laws a good amount of money, but they continued inflicting mental and physical torture on my sister.’’
