The Centre has called a meeting of DGPs of the North Eastern states on November 5 to discuss ways to deal with emerging internal security threats in the region, an official source said today. Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who will chair the meeting, will review on the overall security scenario in the region vis-à-vis the recent serial blasts in Assam, Tripura and Manipur. Official sources said that the DGPs of the North Eastern states will trash out to develop a fresh security strategy to deal with the terror threat from across the border, Bangladesh and within states. “The meeting will discuss on the threat posed by jihadis spreading its tentacles in the northeast, especially those operating from Bangladesh with active patronage from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence and Bangladeshi’s Directorate General of Forces Intelligence,” an official, who wished not to mention his name said. Other issues include the “new linkages” of ULFA, KLO and ATTF with Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jehadi-e-Islami. He added: “Strengthening of intelligence gathering and sharing amongst different state and central security agencies would be another key agenda”. “The intelligence gathering and sharing network amongst different security agencies in the region was found wanting. Therefore, discussion would be held to formulate a suitable mechanism for better coordination,” the official said. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who had visited the blast sites in Assam, said that his government will not go soft on terror nor compromise on terror. He assured ‘effective’ steps would be taken to combat terror. Meanwhile, the proposed two-day annual security review meeting of North East DGPs and IGPs scheduled on November 6 and 7 here has been cancelled.
