Parliamentary secretary, social welfare, women and child development, Chotisüh Sazo, Thursday called upon officers of social welfare department to develop good rapport with the community and involve them in implementation of Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) programmes in the state. Expressing concern over the unsatisfactory services of many Anganwadi centres in the state even after 33 years of inception of ICDS programmes, Sazo stated that success of ICDS programmes depended on effective performance of Anganwadi centres. Delivering his inaugural speech at the 16th officers’ conference of the social welfare department at Hotel Japfü, Chotisüh Sazo asserted that there was a need to optimize the impact of Supplementary Nutrition Programme under ICDS. Highlighting instances of misuse of food items, Sazo urged the officers to be vigilant against such act and to ensure that the food items reached the targeted beneficiaries. Pointing the irregularity of officers and staffs in their workplace, Sazo cautioned the government’s decision to withhold the pay, and supply food items and other materials from the absentees. He added that reports, such as the monthly progress report of ICDS scheme, were wrongly submitted by untrained junior staffs due to the absence of officers-in-charge. Exhorting the gathering, under secretary, Social Welfare Department, Zhothisa, urged the officers to re-cultivate honesty, hardwork and dignity of labour, which he said was the culture of the forefathers, and judiciously implement it for the welfare of the society. During the inaugural programme, Khuppao Hengnya, CDPO Phomching; Nitovi, CDPO Pungro; and R.N. Lotha, Assistant superintendent, were awarded certificates and cash in recognition of their meritorious service towards the department and society. A song was presented by members of North Angami Handicapped Union, Kohima; while Nochet Aier director, Social Welfare Department, chaired the programme.
