Regional conference on "Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture" was organized by school of agriculture in collaboration with North East Education Development Project of IGNOU and IGNOU regional centre, Agartala at Tripura University, Agartala on November 24 and 25. Scientist, academicians and extension workers from all corners of India including Nagaland participated, to deliberate, interact and share experiences. Nagaland team was led by Dr. D. Chetri and Z. Kikon from Directorate of Agriculture and representatives from the four States run KVK's (Kohima, Tuensang, Mokokchung, Mon). According to KVK information and publicity cell, main reason behind organizing such an event on food security for NE region in particular was due to the fact that agriculture sector provided livelihood to approximately 70 per cent of its population yet continued to be a net importer of food grains for its consumption, a number of reasons could be cited for present situation -growing demand for food, changing food habits, less availability of food grains, rising prices, low purchasing power, etc. It is possible to counter the declining agricultural growth rate, ensure greater agrarian prosperity, higher productivity and greater share in the market by using appropriate and imaginative Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system. Building up of crop insurance system, market assurance supported by necessary credit assurance by adopting the KISSAN (Kissan Information Systems, Services and Networking) model of smart extension services that support ICT enabled agricultural information and knowledge empowerment for all farmers in the NE Region. As NE region was bestowed with rich and fertile land and ideal agro-climatic conditions suited to grow varieties of crops that would contribute towards overall national food security. KVK information and publicity cell also stated the conference covered a wide range of subjects through paper presentation by eminent scientist, academicians and extension workers on the themes- food security-concept, status, factors and strategies, sustainable agricultural development and its impact on food security, resource and institutional development for sustainable agriculture, role of science and technology, natural and human resources and climate change in sustainable development and food security, globalization, rising food prices, agricultural price policy and public distribution system for food security and sustainable agriculture development, technological innovations and education and extension system for sustainable agriculture development, empowerment of small farmers, women and rural entrepreneurs.
