Meghalaya Director General of Police BK Dey Sawian suggested that a National Security Guards (NSG) hub should be located in Kolkata instead of Guwahati to serve the Eastern and North Eastern zones. "A NSG hub should be in Kolkata with a dedicated aircraft so that they can fly at any given time," Sawian said. "Having the NSG hub in the North East say in Guwahati or Shillong with no facilities to airlift the commandos at any given time won't serve any purpose," he pointed out. Sawian's suggestion assumed significance in the wake of the Assam government demanding for setting up a NSG hub in Guwahati to proficiently tackle terror in the region. Recently, Assam Chief Minister and Governor Tarun Gogoi and Shiv Charan Mathur felt that the Union government must place an NSG hub in Guwahati as it would be easier for the elite commando force to reach the other North Eastern states in a short notice. The Meghalaya Police Chief, however, strongly felt that Kolkata was the right place for setting up of the NSG hub so that the elite commando force could respond to future terrorist attacks more quickly. "A quick reaction can only be from the main centre like Kolkata which have all the facilities to react. They can even take-off at 0200 o'clock in the morning to response to any terrorist attacks and it is 45 minutes fly to Guwahati or Agartala," Sawian said. Asked about the overall security situation in the state, Mr Sawian confidently said that the state is absolutely secure and urged the public not to panic. "We have taken all preventive measures and deployed spotters in various parts of the state to check the movement of any suspected persons," he said. He, however, appealed to the public also to be alert and cooperate with the police to ensure foolproof security and thwart any unpleasant incident.
