The second phase agitation of the Naga Students’ Federation’s (NSF) in protest against the alleged failure of the State government to fix the length of service of its employees, took a violent turn Wednesday here at the Civil Secretariat junction, as security personnel scuffled with NSF volunteers who were preventing the Secretariat staff from attending office. During the scuffle that lasted for about forty minutes, the OC of North Police Station was reportedly injured when the students pelted stones at police and IRB personnel while NSF vice president Charles Lotha alleged that he was hit by a rifle butt. The indefinite picketing of Secretariat office as part of second phase agitation of the NSF, commenced Wednesday around 9 a.m with one group of NSF volunteers blocking the main entrance of the Civil Secretariat complex while another group posted at High School junction, prevented buses carrying staffs of the Secretariat from proceeding further. Amidst heavy presence of IRB and police personnel from High School junction to the Secretariat, many Secretariat staffs were seen stranded at High School junction, while some others were seen walking on foot to office. NSF members said they received information that the State government had issued orders to the staffs to attend office and around 10. 30 a.m, the Secretariat buses packed with the staffs were proceeding to the Secretariat, when the volunteers stopped the buses. This led to a scuffle between police and NSF volunteers. Later, under police security the buses along with the staffs managed to drive inside the Secretariat, even as the students outside shouted “We want justice” and continued to block the road some few meters away from the Secretariat junction. At around 11.15 a.m, the convoy of Home minister Imkong L. Imchen who also arrived at the Secretariat, too was blocked by the volunteers for about fifteen minutes before it was allowed to enter the Secretariat. NSF said the Home minister had invited them for a meeting in the Secretariat, which was turned down by the NSF officials, who insisted that the meeting should be held outside the Secretariat. The picketing continued till 2 p.m.
