Mokokchung remembers Dec 27,1994

A candle light service was held Saturday at Mokokchung Police Point in memory of the victims of the arson and rampage on December 27, 1994 by the 16th Maratha Light Infantry and the 10 Assam Rifles. Organized by the Ao Students Conference (AKM), the programme started with observance of one-minute silence as a mark of respect to those who died in the incident. Several speakers recounted the horrors of the rampage that had left deep scars in the minds of the denizens of this town and also affected the life of a once vibrant society. The speakers included President Ao senden, President All Ward Chairman, M. Bendangnukshi Lkr, Sumi Community and Amenla Imsong, Bethel prayer Centre. Following the ambush and killing of the Lt.Col of the 16th MLI by one underground faction on December 27, 1994 army went on a rampage in Mokokchung town killing innocent people and burning down several buildings. Besides the 12 dead, four women were raped and scores of people injured. A total of 31 buildings, 38 shops and 18 vehicles were burned down. The memorial service carried the message that no matter how big the loss might have been, today the people have overcome it with the resolve to let peace and harmony prevail in the land.
