Human rights activist escapes

A prominent human rights activist in Manipur under NSA term on sedition charge, Sapamcha Kangleipal escaped from judicial custody by breaking the window at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, Imphal in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. Police said preliminary investigations showed that Kangleipal possibly escaped at midnight taking advantage of the absence of the security personnel from the back window of security ward to join a prominent insurgent group operating actively in the state. According to a source from JN Hospital, he has been shifted to the security ward of the hospital and was seen till Sunday evening in the ward, a nurse of the hospital revealed. Search operations were carried out at Kangleipal's residence in Chalou under Lamlai police station in Imphal east and in the locality of the village and other possible hideouts by the police. Superintendent of Police, Imphal east district Th Radheshyam, told Nagaland Post that Kangelipal was admitted to the hospital for medical treatment for his illness. "Preliminary investigation revealed that he had broken the window at the back side of the ward he is has been lodging taking advantage of the quietness of the cold winter night. "Further investigation is on to find any lapse in the security arrangement, he added.
