Police record shows increase in crime

Crime graph in Dimapur, under East Police Station, registered a sharp rise during 2008 with more 369 cases alone that included - murder, attempted murder, dacoity, burglaries, thefts, extortions, kidnappings, cheating or forgery, rapes and other related crimes. Topping the list of crimes were related cases of dacoity, burglaries, thefts and robberies which stood at 158 as compared to 124 in 2007, followed by 116 other related cases involving Nagaland Liqour Prohibition Act (NLPA), Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS), Drugs and Cosmetics, Motor Vehicle Accidents and Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Acts. In the case of murder and attempted murder, 27 and seven respectively were reported in 2008 and 2007 comparing to that of 19 and eight respectively in 2007 while extortions have shot up to 34 in 2008 from three in 2007. Rape related cases also increased to three in 2008 from one in 2007. Commenting on the rise of crimes and other related cases in Dimapur, Superintendent of Police, Dimapur, Liremo Lotha, when contacted said detection of crimes especially cases in regard to extortions were very high in 2008. OC East Police Station, Atu Zümvu, also concurred with what the SP Dimaput told this Reporter while adding that the rise was mainly due to registration and detection by the Police. Registered cases under East Police Station in 2008 Murder- 27 Attempted murder- 7 Dacoity- 1 Robbery- 42 Burglary- 19 Extortion- 34 Theft- 19 Kidnapping- 13 Cheating/forgery- 10 Rape- 3 Counterfeit- 1 Others- 116 Total- 369
