After a gap of three days to the search and destroy mission of counter insurgency forces in the state, a youth was gunned down Saturday by security forces in Thoubal district in what police claimed to be an encounter. The suspect was shot dead by a team of Thoubal police commandos near Wabagai buffalo farm, some 10 kms away from north of Kakching police station Saturday afternoon. According to police sources, the incident occurred when security forces arrived at the spot about 2.30 pm on information that some armed militants were present with the intention of carrying out anti-social activity. The police added that when security teams reached some men were found but when challenged to stop, instead of complying they suddenly opened fire at the security men resulting the killing of one militant. A small weapon loaded with some live rounds was recovered from the dead person, the police said. In Manipur since the beginning of 2009, more than 10 people who police claimed were militants were killed. With report of 492 deaths in the year 2008 of militancy-related fatalities, Manipur tops among the states in the north eastern region and second in the country only to Jammu and Kashmir.
