Surrendered militant declared deserter

Manipur government declared a surrendered activist of PULF (People United Liberation Front) who decamped from the government run Surrendered Militants Rehabilitation Centre as deserter, official said Sunday. Md Jamakhan alias Ithemba alias Laskhar Jack (24) son of Md Abdul Salam of Sikhong village in Thoubal district, according to a message of the camp commander of the rehabilitation centre P Manikanta who is also the commandant of the 2nd Manipur Rifles deserted the centre on December 2 last year. State home department on confirming decamped of PULF activist issued an order on January 8 expelled him. He will be treated as deserted from the centre from December 2, the day he vanished from the centre, the order stated. At least four surrendered militants all surrendered from PULF outfit deserted from the State Rehabilitation Centre located at Lamphel during year 2008, said a report of the state police department while putting up a proposal for erecting fencing and providing additional infrastructures to the Centre. Authority of the police department is proposing a fund amounting to Rs. 24,43,940 for the above said proposal, official source said. A total of 36 militants surrendered counting the four deserted ones are currently lodging in the rehabilitation centre opened under the Centre sponsored and run by the state government. With 16 surrendered militants, PULF outfit has highest number surrendered militants in the Centre. But, as all the four inmates deserted from the centre at different period of time belonged to this group, only 12 are currently lodging at the Centre. Two of them deserted the centre in September, one in August while the other one earlier this year. Among the remaining surrenderees, seven are from People Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), four from United National Liberation Front (UNLF), two each from PLA, Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kuki National Army (KNA) and National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) and only one from the Kanglei Yoel Kanna Lup, KYKL.
