The Congress has accused Mizo National Front (MNF) MLA-elect from Lawngtlai West, C Ramhluna, of buying votes during the just concluded state Assembly elections. L H Chhuanawma, a Congress candidate who lost the seat to the MNF first-timer, alleged the latter and his campaigner C Thanghluna, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Lai autonomous district council, used at least Rs 59 lakh for buying votes in the run up to the December two polls. Talking to reporters here today, Chhuanawma alleged Rs 50 lakh of the district council employees provident fund and Rs nine lakh of the forest development agency were withdrawn by the CEM for distribution to the voters during the campaign. He also said a report on the illegal and irregular activities of the MNF candidate and CEM had been reported to the Election Observer and Governor before the counting of votes with a request to take prompt action against the defaulters. Ramhluna, who went on voluntary retirement as state principal chief conservator of forest ahead of the polls, was one of the three MNF MLAs elected in the recent elections.
