A red alert has been sounded and security beefed up in Meghalaya after security agencies received inputs about sinister plans of militants to unleash terror in Tura, the district headquarter of West Garo Hills, before Christmas, Meghalaya Finance minister Conrad K Sangma said Friday. The People’s Liberation Front of Meghalaya (PLF-M) and Liberation of A’chik Elite Force (LAEF) planned to bomb Tura supermarket and other crowded places on December 23 and 24, the minister said. The militant groups plan to attack Tura was unearthed after police arrested a senior PLF-M militant Sengrang A Sangma on December 12 near Jengjal area in West Garo Hills district. “Yes police and intelligence agencies unearthed plans of the militant groups - PLF-M and LAEF - to unleash terror by bombing public places in Tura before Christmas and New Year,” Sangma said. Sangma said according to police, the militants were planning to trigger explosions either inside the Tura supermarket or at one of the crowded places on December 23 and 24 when the places will be very crowded. He however asked people not to panic as security agencies were on high alert and capable of foiling such design of the militants. All the districts have been put on high alert and security officials were reviewing the situation regularly, government spokesman Conrad Sangma said today. Quick Reaction Teams had been activated, while frisking of vehicles and passengers were done at all entry points into the State, he said. West Garo Hills SP, JFK Marak said, “The heightened security has been in place in view of the recent blasts in Guwahati and Mumbai. A large number of visitors come to popular sites and markets during the festive season.” He however refused to comment on the reported threat and said, “there is nothing like that.” Meghalaya police arrested Dablin N Sangma and Babul K Sangma, Sumar K Marak, Gradual Sangma and Pankaj Khalakary of PLFM from Mendipathar on December 17 from East Garo Hills district. According to the police the PLF-M and LAEF wanted to avenge the killing of LAEF commander-in-chief Kimbre Sangma by the security forces by carrying out series of bomb blasts in Tura. Meanwhile, a high level meeting of senior police and government officials was held here Friday to discuss about the possible terrorist attacks.
