The Education Research and Development Foundation (ERDF) has announced setting up of the University of Technology at Hatimura in Meghalaya. The Meghalaya government has approved the ERDF proposal with the enactment of the University of Technology Act, 2008. The University has got it affiliation with North Eastern Hill University. “The idea to set up the university was to increase the number of science students in the North Eastern states,” ERDF Chairman M Hoque said today. He said the University would be set near Killing Road, 9th mile, in Ri-Bhoi district after clearance by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly through a Bill. The university will provide progressive educational training in the field of engineering, science and technology, and carry forward location specific research and development. “We will have special provisions to enable local boys and girls getting priority in admission to the University,” Hoque said. The first academic session of the University would begin in 2011, he added. Hoque was also of the opinion that the setting up of the university would help create jobs for local people. Early this year, the ERDF had laid the foundation stone of its Engineering College under the banner of Regional Institute of Science and Technology at Raid Marwet in Ri-Bhoi district.
