Girl killed in militant firing, 3 hurt

A 23-year old girl was killed and three others including a minor boy hurt when well armed suspected cadres of the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) opened fire indiscriminately at Tolen village in Churachandpur district of Manipur Wednesday night at around 11 pm, an official report said Thursday. Decrying the exchange carried out by the militants, villagers have demanded adequate compensation and apology from the KLA outfit under the customary law of the Kuki community reports said, Thursday. The militants intruded into the village Wednesday night and opened fire without any apparent reason resulting in the death of the girl inside her house and injuring a minor along with two youth. The girl named Lalremoi Matte daughter of Lanchinthang succumbed to the bullet injury on the spot while the other injured Saiphu (25) and Sailenlal (24) along with the minor sustained bullets injuries in the indiscriminate firing. The militant group, KLA is among the 18 Kuki based militants maintaining cease fire with government forces after signing the suspension of operation with the Manipur government and government of India with effect from August last year. In another unrelated incident, troops of 8 Assam Rifles gunned down a militant at Aigejang village located under Chakpikarong police station of interior Chandel district of Manipur Thursday morning and recovered a 9 mm pistol loaded with four live rounds of ammunition. Assam Rifles source said that the encounter occurred in the wee hour Thursday when the troops entering the village were fired upon by the militants retaliated. The body of the slain militant has been handed over to the police, the report added.
