2 arrested for assaulting OC

A couple was arrested in Meghalaya after police accused them of involving in recent assault of a police officer, police said Friday. The couple, Nalbi Choudhury and Ibiris Lyngdoh Nonglait was arrested Thursday from Shallang village in West Khasi Hills district on charges of assaulting Officer-in-Charge of Nongstoin police station BK Mishra and damaging the said police station, police said. Ibiris is a stenographer in the office of superintendent of police, West Khasi Hills district, while Nalbi a coal exporter to Bangladesh. On January 27, Mishra was was severely injured after an agitated mob assaulted him for demanding money from truckers passing thorough National Highway- 44 (E). Meanwhile, Meghalaya Commericial Truck Owners and Operators Association Friday demanded unconditional release of the arrested couple. In a memorandum submitted to home minister HS Lyngdoh, the association alleged that the Officer-in-Charge of Nongstoin police station had demanded Rs 1000 from truckers carrying coal. “Such kind of demand money or extortion from the truckers is not a new thing but it is the bad habit of police everywhere in the state”, the association said.
