Godowns of Manipur food and civil supply department at Sangaiporou, Imphal closed down effective from Wednesday as staff and officials of the department decided to suspend all official works decrying the abduction of three officials of the department, allegedly on extortion demand. Manipur fishery department was paralyzed as one of its officials was also abducted by a group of militants, allegedly for ransom. FCS minister Y Erabot had recently in an intimation to union minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, Sharat Pawar stated that the implementation of public distribution system (PDS) in Manipur has been severely affected due to the slow and tardy supply of foodgrains by the Food Corporation India (FCI) to the state and disturbances by militants. A group of militants had abducted three district supply officers (DSO) of the state FCS department namely S Iboton (Imphal west district supply officer), W Deven (Imphal east district supply officer) and Th Bhumeshore (Bishnupur district supply officer) on January 30. The officials have been detained by the militants for a huge monetary demand served to the state FCS department, said an official of the department posted at the office of FCS located at Sangaiporou, Imphal for delivery and receipt of rice and other public distribution items received from the Food Corporation of India (FCI). The operations have also been suspended effective from Wednesday as the militants failed to release the abducted officials despite appeal from many circles. Locals of the Soibam Leikai, Imphal where one of the officers named W Deven hailed from staged a sit-in protest Tuesday demanding un-conditional safe release of the officers. The employees of the FCS department planned to carry out protest Wednesday but it was suspended after reported warning from the abductors, threatening the life of the three officials, a highly reliable source said. The officials of the department at the godown, however, did not comment when inquiry on the matter was made. Meanwhile, working at the state fishery directorate office, Imphal was disturbed after the kidnapping of one of its officials, Huidrom Biramani Singh by two unknown persons said to be cadres of a militant group on Monday. The abduction came to light Wednesday after the family lodged a complaint with the police. He was kidnapped from his office by the two unknown persons at gun point at around 12.50 pm. The kidnappers took him along with his vehicle a maruti car.
