2 rapists shot dead

Two youths, suspected to be behind the rape and murder of a handicapped woman at the border town of Moreh on January 22 last were shot dead late Tuesday night by suspected militants at an open place near Moljang village some two kilometer away from the Moreh police station, police report said Wednesday. The deceased were identified as Asem Romen (26) son of late Ibochou of Moreh ward-7 and Md Amir Khan (30) son of Md Babu of Kwakta village in Bishnupur district currently residing at Moreh-7. Police retrieved the dead bodies Wednesday morning. A 23 year old girl named Lamkhoting Mate, a physically challenged girl, running a small pan shop at Moreh was found murdered with signs of having been raped inside her shop in the morning of January 22. She was found hanging from the roof of her shop with a cloth when her family broke the door of the shop when she failed to wake till late morning. Condemning the merciless murder of the physically challenged girl in a gruesome and inhuman manner, many civil bodies in the state including District Committee (DWC), Chandel and All Tribal Women Organisation (ATWO), Chandel district have demanded booking and befitting punishment to the culprits at the earliest from the government. Police said quoting the statement of the families that the two youths were abducted by a group of militants Tuesday evening in which police suspected was related to the murder of the girl. As per statement to the police by the villagers of Moljang, gun firing was heard Tuesday night at around 11 pm near the village two dead bodies were found Wednesday morning in a pool of blood.
