Nagaland State Women Commission today questioned the manner in which the 3rd consultative meeting on the 108th Constitution (Amendment Bill) 2008 on 33% Women Reservation Bill was held recently and advised the state government to keep in abeyance the resolution adopted on that day till it recommended a clear decision of Naga women. “It is highly questionable that the NSWC was not invited to the consultative meeting held on the 29th January regarding reservation for women in Nagaland” NSWC Chairperson Sano Vamuzo stated in a letter addressed to the state chief minister. “The State Government shall consult the Commission before formulating major policies and while drafting legislation affecting women in Nagaland and such consultations shall have persuasive value” she quoted from the Nagaland Commission Act 2006, Clause 9. She also said that the commission was not given a copy of the draft bill, despite queries being made by it before the public debate was held. The commission also took serious note of not including the Women’s Wing of different political parties in the debate while all political parties were invited, not inviting the apex women organization including the NMA and Eastern Naga Women Organization which consisted of six tribes during the last consultation meeting. In view of all these, the commission contended that the resolution so adopted during the consultation meeting cannot be taken as a consensus of the Naga women. In this regard, the commission said it would carry out consultations with all women organization at the earliest after which a clear stand of Naga women on reservation of Women would be conveyed to the state government. It may be mentioned that the All Political Party Consultative Committee convened the consultative meeting on January 29 last at the conference hall of the Assembly Secretariat to discuss the issue of the 108th Constitution (Amendment Bill) 2008 on 33% Women Reservation Bill.
