The ‘stone man’ returned to haunt Guwahati streets late Wednesday night, targeting his fifth victim in less than two months in the city. A Hindu priest was found unconscious and profusely bleeding at his makeshift bed on a footpath in the Athgaon area of the city this morning by local residents. He was rushed to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, where doctors informed that he was hit on the head with some hard material and also a piece of his ear was cut off. The priest, who also keeps a shop near which he was sleeping, is still struggling for his life. He is the fifth such victim to have been targeted by a suspected group or an individual killer in the city since January. The assailant follows the same pattern of hitting the victims usually beggars and vagabonds sleeping on the footpaths with a stone and gouging out the eyes or damaging other organs. The area of ‘operation’ is also confined to one-km radius area of Panbazar, Fancy Bazar and Athgaon. Police recovered a blood-stained stone from the site, though all attempts to trace the killer have failed so far. ‘’We are certain that the same group has been working. It could also be a single man with a psychological problem. We are trying our best to nab the killers,’’ city SSP Pradip Haloi said. The ‘stone man’ had killed four beggars since January in Panbazar and Fancy Bazar areas.
