Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) is likely to take over the water supply to the Municipal Areas in the state capital from the state PHE Department very soon. The PHE Department is learnt to have proposed to the KMC to take over water supply to the municipal areas of the state capital recently. The resource starved KMC however is reluctant to take over the task in a hurry in view of the prevailing conditions of water supply system in Kohima which is not only haphazard and unplanned but also very old. KMC Chairman Vipopal Kintso while revealing this to Nagaland Post said that the proposal for the KMC to take over water supply to the municipal areas was made as part of the ongoing process of streamlining systems. While agreeing that KMC would have to take over the same one day or the other, he also said that due to lack of resources at its disposal, the Council was demanding the PHED to carry out a major haul in repairing and restructuring water supply system. KMC particularly asked the PHED for systematic planning and laying of new pipelines before handing over to it or to provide a one time grant for the council to carry out the same. The existing water supply pipelines in Kohima were laid haphazardly decades ago without any planning and many of these pipelines are now laying rusted and broken under permanent structures thus making it difficult to trace out and repair.
