1 killed in encounter

An underground activist from Nagaland was killed and another civilian injured in an encounter with Assam Police that took place at Lahorijan Market at 9.30 p.m. Tuesday. The slain activist was identified as one Honato Sumi, aged 25 from Suruhoto range , while the injured who was apprehended by the police was identified as one Beni Rai (above 50 years), a vegetable vendor. Assam Police sources claim the activist, earlier with the NSCN(I-M) had later joined the ‘GPRN/NSCN’. The encounter took place after a posse of Assam Police rushed to Lahorijan Market on a tip off that some armed Naga underground activist was extorting money. On reaching the spot, Police were fired upon after which they retaliated and shot dead Honato and injuring Beni Rai on his leg. Police recovered one .32 pistol (Italy made), eight empty cases and one live round ammunition from the site. The body of the deceased was shifted to Diphu for post mortem, while the injured taken to Bokajan police station for further investigation. Dimapur police on receiving the information went to the spot for enquiry.The body was later handed over to relatives at Bokajan P.S late on Wednesday evening. A case has been registered under Bokajan police station.
