State Agriculture department is to be on the process of coming out with another innovative idea to market the state agriculture produce by setting up Value Added Centre under the brand name AgoNag (derived from Agriculture Nagaland) in all the district headquarters soon. Under the proposed AgroNag, mini food processing units will be set up in all the district headquarters where agriculture produces from a particular district will be processed. The finished product will then be collected and marketed centrally. State Agriculture Minister Dr. Chumben Murry revealed this to the Nagaland Post in an exclusive interview. The AgroNag may not process the finished product for marketing but could provide raw material in the form of concentrated juice extracted from certain Agri-produces such as Pineapple, Ginger or Passion fruit. Further, to boost the marketing of agriculture produces of the state, the government is also planning to set up two terminal hubs to be located at Dimapur and Tuli which are presently in the consultancy stage, Dr Murry said. He also revealed that the state Agriculture Department was in the process of bringing out a new State Agriculture Policy in tune with the vision 2020. This new policy would aim at reducing Jhum cultivation which presently accounted for 70% of cultivated land in the state and increase the wet terrace cultivation which presently accounted only 30% of the total cultivated land. Further, the new policy will emphasize on scientific inputs and research and also encourages double/triple cropping to increase the agriculture produces as the state presently practices only mono cropping (single or seasonal cropping), he added.
