The NSCN (I-M) has accused Assam Rifles of bringing about a state of panic in Ukhrul by planting an explosive device and generating false alarm to find pretext to run down on NSCN.
A press statement issued by MIP/GPRN Thursday said Assam Rifles-NSCN standoff at Shirui was amicably solved on February 2 keeping in view the mutual interest of both the parties not to dampen the spirit that has carried the “Indo-Naga” political peace talks for more than 11 years. However, the NSCN-IM alleged that 17 AR at Ukhrul was giving all indication that they don’t give “two hoots” about honouring it.
Referring to the February 9 incident where “unidentified persons” set off a bomb at Ukhrul main town area, the NSCN-IM release said the NSCN town command had gone to the spot to investigate and track down the culprits. But the Assam Rifles personnel, who appeared at the scene on the pretext of looking into the incident, went headlong after the NSCN members, the release said.
To be on the safe side and not to allow the AR to come in direct confrontation, the NSCN-IM members moved out in their vehicle , only to be pursued by AR personnel, it stated.
Further, stating that the NSCN members knowing the “aggressive mode” of AR abandoned their vehicle and set off on foot, the NSCN-IM alleged that the AR personnel came rushing to the spot and fired at its cadres, adding that it was “divine providence” that bullets missed them.
“The unprovoked provocation of AR never goes down well with the desire of the NSCN to create a new but peaceful environment after the unpleasant Shirui episode,” it stated.
The NSCN-IM while claiming that the world was watching the post ceasefire “Indo-Naga relation”, particularly the free rein given to the Assam Rifles, said this dangerous trend if not properly checked would undo the whole structure of peace built up over since 1997.
It also stated that unfortunately the democratic image of India has undergone severe beating at the hands of Assam Rifles. Such devilish conspiracy against NSCN will do no good to AR whose slogan “AR friends of the hill people” was now nothing more than devilish charm, MIP added.
