Students’ enrollment hiked to more than 10% of the total population Additional chief secretary, School Education Department, Banuo Z. Jamir Friday exhorted officials of education department to correctly and sincerely implement the Mid Day Meal (MDM) scheme in the state. Expressing serious concern over instances where students’ enrolments under the MDM scheme were hiked by more than 10% of the total population, Banuo cautioned that such irregularity should be checked and stopped. Speaking as the chief guest at a one- day orientation workshop and review meeting under the Mid Day Meal scheme, Banuo Z. Jamir stressed on the need for awareness and sensitization of the MDM scheme right from the village level. She stated that the MDM was not just for the purpose of giving food, but for regularity, learning, increase in enrollment, reduction in number of drop outs, etc. Stating that the state had faced certain drawbacks after the launching of the scheme in 1995, Banuo said that the department should see how the scheme was impacting on the society and plan out implementation programmes. To implement the scheme successfully, the chief guest stressed on community participation and the need to sensitize on the importance and value of the programme to the people, especially the mothers. She also stated that quality and hygiene of food should be checked by parents and further urged the department to coordinate with the department of Health and Family Welfare on health aspects for providing micro nutrients and vitamins. To keep a health record and know the importance of good health, students should maintain school health card, she said. With the department declaring the year 2009 as “Year of Monitoring and Supervision”, Banuo reiterated that the various areas of failure should be identified and that there should be no backsliding from what the department had achieved so far. Earlier, a presentation on Mid Day Meal scheme was delivered by B. Tingshem, joint director and nodal officer, MDM; while welcome address was delivered by Angau I. Thou, joint secretary, School Education Department. The programme was chaired by Nipusilie Angami, director, School Education Department.
