To purify the body, mind and soul to lead a victorious life, Sekrenyi, the premier festival of the Angami community, was celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety at Kohima local ground on Wednesday. This year the festival was hosted by the Northern Angami Public Organization (NAPO) under the aegis of Angami Public Organization with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio as Sekrenyi Feast Father. While greeting the Angamis and others who came to partake in the celebration, Rio said Sekrenyi festival was a time to build up and renew friendship and wished that peace and unity would continue to prevail among the Angamis in particular and the Nagas in general. Underlining the need for documenting our traditional cultural heritage, food habits and songs and publishing them in book form, he assured that the state government would help all the tribes in this connection. He informed that the state government was planning to make a documentation programme on Naga costumes, ethnic design, pattern and sample of food etc of all tribes of Nagaland in order to preserve our rich cultural heritage and traditions so that it can be passed on to the future generation in a proper manner. Rio urged the Angamis to spearhead the programme so that it will be an inspiration to other tribes and also to fulfill our dream of ‘One Hope, One Vision’. Even though the Nagas changed their religion from their old beliefs to Christianity, our rich and beautiful culture and traditions should be preserved and passed on to the next generations, he stressed. Urban Development and Higher Education Minister Dr Shurhozelie in his address urged the Angamis to preserve their rich and beautiful cultural heritage, traditions and beautiful language, which, he said, is their originality.
