Two abducted non-local businessmen were rescued by the 26 Assam Rifles from the Axis Bank premises in Kohima on Saturday. Acting on a tip off that the abducted businessmen would be taken to the bank to withdraw money as payment for ransom, the AR laid a trap in the vicinity of the bank near Razhu Point. When the AR spotted a few persons moving in a suspicious manner along with the two businessmen, they moved in as the group entered the bank at around 11 a.m.. When the AR personnel challenged the abductors, they took advantage of the melee in the crowded market place and escaped, leaving behind their captors, a defence release said. The AR release said its personnel refrained from firing to avoid any collateral damage. The two businessmen who were rescued were identified as Gurung and S. Dey. On interrogation, it was revealed that the two businessmen were abducted by suspected NSCN (K) activists on February 26 and kept in captivity. An undisclosed ransom amount had been agreed to be paid by the two for their safe release, the release stated. The AR warned that stringent measures would be taken against any miscreants to ensure peace and security in the state.
