Football for Bible begins

Lotha Baptist Church Dimapur (LBCD) and Ekranipathar NBC opened their, campaign on a high note with LBCD thrashing Ekranipathar NBC 7-0, in the men’s encounter while in the women’s match Ekranipathar NBC blanked Dimapur Sumi BC 3-0, in the opening day of Football for Bible 2009, tourney played at DDSC Stadium, here Monday. The tournament is being organized by Bible Society of India, Dimapur Auxiliary Resource Mobilisation Committee (RMC) and will conclude on March 12. Led by Janika Sangma hat-trick, Ekranipathar NBC women’s team has now booked their place for the final match. Janika Sangma also registered herself as the first woman to score a hat-trick in the tourney. She found the net in the 16th, 32nd and 35th minutes respectively in the regulated 40 minutes match. In the second match of the day, LBCD took a big step to move in the next round as Chenithung four goals inspired them to a convincing 7-0 victory over Ekranipathar. He opened the scoring inside Ekranipathar box in the 17th minute after a brilliant right cross from Nyanthung who was also involved for the team third goal. After 10 minutes William doubled the score line after an assist by Chentithung. Ekranipathar Marsha Sangma wasted an opportunity of reducing the score line in the 15th minute when his shot was wonderfully denied by the rival custodian. After 4 minutes from the first half, man of the match Nyanthung scored the third goal after a misjudged by the keeper allowing him to push the ball into the net. Chenithung scored his second goal in the 41st minute with a solo run effort after beating two defenders giving no chance for the keeper to react. Skipper of LBCD, Benri also added his name to team score line after his curling 20 yards free kick found the net in the 49th minute. Chenithung scored his third goal in the 52nd minute and with two minutes to the final whistle he added his fourth goal. Earlier, DC Dimapur Maongwati Aier declaring the tournament opened appreciated the organizers for their initiative in organizing the tournament and called for such more regular events in the coming days. He was of the view that organizing such kind of tournament would bring various colonies, churches and neighbors to close contact with one another for which unity and peace in the society develop. Altogether 14 men’s team and 5 women’s team from various churches around Dimapur are taking part in the tournament. The tournament carries a cash prize of Rs. 25000/- and Rs. 15000/- for the winners and runners up in men’s category while in women category the winners and runners up will receive Rs. 15000/- and Rs. 10000/- respectively.
