Recruitment drive for sportsmen

A three day recruitment drive to recruit sportsmen from Manipur state began on Wednesday, with Maj Gen Shakti Gurung announcing “‘I declare the Recruitment Rally open and dedicate it to the sportsmen and people of Manipur.” According to a press communiqué press from information bureau (defence wing) Government of India received here said, that Army Sports Institute, ASI Pune the premier Army Institute in imparting training to sportsmen along with Madras Engineering Group, MEG Centre Bangalore, Artillery Centre Nasik and Boys Sports Company, 58 Gorkha Training Centre Shillong arrived to scout for the talent. These organizations are scouting for suitable sporting talent who could be future medal winner for the country in forthcoming Olympics and other International Sporting Meet, the release said. Sporting talent from 11 different disciplines, viz Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Canoeing, Diving, Kayaking, Fencing, Football, Hockey, Weight lifting and Wrestling are being considered in the rally being conducted during the drive. “Those who don’t make it need not be disappointed as we will be conducting more such rallies in the future”, GOC pointed out. Col Varinder Singh from ASI Pune stated that there was no fixed quota and they will select as many sportsmen as possible provided they have talent. About 2000 aspirants between the age group from 9 to 16 years turned up for the event. Earlier during the inauguration, GOC had felicitated 11 renowned sportsmen from the state, the most prominent being Marry Kom who very deservedly got the loudest adulation. In his interaction with the media, Gen Gurung stated that the present recruitment drive will be beneficial to both, the promising sportsmen of Manipur and the Army as well.
