Women journalists meet

Women journalists across the country gathered in Imphal to attend a 3-day annual meet of the Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI) hosted by NWM, Manipur branch on Thursday. The meet attended by around 70 women journalists from all over the country including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Andra Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu started at Kangla Hall, Imphal. The Anupama Jayaraman Award for the year 2009 was awarded to a senior correspondent from Hindustan Times Alifiya Khan. The inaugural function was attended by chairperson of Manipur State Women Commission, Dr Ch Jamini Devi and presided by the Editor of the Ereibak, a local daily of Imphal. Speaking on the occasion the chief guest Jamini Devi said the economy of the women being low, the crucial roles they take was laudable. She also lauded the women journalists of the country for braving all odds while executing their duties especially in a conflict riddled region like Manipur. She also expressed believed that the outcome of the meet will be converted into action. The women also interacted with members of All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) after the inaugural session. Some of the highlights of the meet include meeting women leaders of the state to discus various issues of women in the state, discussion on NWMI, cultural programme, workshop on media ethics, presentation on conflict situation in Manipur, discussion on gender and status of women in Manipur, sharing by victims of conflict situation, and interaction with dramatist Padmashree Heisnam Kanhailal and his wife-actress Padmashree H Sabitri, sources said.
