Assam governments attempt to recruit contractual Special Police Officer (SPO) from the surrendered militants for poll duty has run into rough weather when the selected SPOs refused to join protesting lower pay and working conditions. More than 500 SPOs on Thursday gathered in front of the Special Branch headquarters of the Assam Police at Kahilipara and refused to join in the work under the prevailing terms and conditions. All these SPOs had been selected through interview process promising them Rs 4000 per month as honorarium. “But when we arrived to join today, we found our honorarium reduced to Rs 3000 and that too for a single month of job. This infuriated all of us,” said one Akhil Baisya, a surrendred ULFA militant, who came from lower Assam to enroll himself as the SPOs. All of them were interviewed last year and asked them to join today when the fiasco broke out.
