Despite the order of district magistrate to arrest Meghalaya’s mining and geology minister Donkupar Massar, he was released by police after being taken to police station on charges of kidnapping and assault. Massar, a cabinet minister in the Nationalist Congress Party backed Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government was arrested from Upper Shillong near the Eastern Air Command headquarters here at around 7 p.m. “I had asked the superintendent of police to arrest him, but I don’t know how he was given a bail,” East Khasi Hills district deputy commissioner B Dhar said. He said the minister was arrested on charges of assaulting and kidnapping people in Phyrnai village and Wahumlien under Pynursla police station during the KHADC polling. Massar’s wife Grace Kharpuri is contesting KHADC election as an Independent candidate from Nongshken constituency, where her husband was elected as an Independent MLA to the state Assembly. Dhar added, “the minister had assaulted many people but only few had filed an FIR against the minister and we are yet to identify the person kidnap, but police are on the job to trace the victim.” East Khasi Hills district superintendent of police AR Mawthoh said that the minister had assaulted two villagers Phyrnai village after they told him that they did not vote. An FIR was filed by the labourers at Pynursla police station, he said. Massar, however, had denied the allegations leveled against him and said he would file a counter FIR. “I will file a counter FIR against those people who had charged me”, he said. After being elected as minister, Massar has been on many counts accused of assaulting and intimidating people. Monday’s FIR is the fourth FIR against the minister. In earlier occasions two FIRs had been filed against him for assaulting four labourers in Borsora and a third FIR for assaulting a village headman.
