Mizo police foil bank robbery

The Lawngtlai police, by its dexterity and swift action, foiled a robbery attempt at the SBI branch at Lawngtlai in southern Mizoram. Police today said one Naik Lalhmingmawia, personnel of the Mizoram Armed Police, who was also the guard of the bank, entered the bank armed with his service rifle last evening and attempted to commit robbery. As he fired some rounds, some of the bank employees ran out of the bank. Later, some of the bank employees, who had managed to flee the building, informed the police who acted swiftly. “The police rounded up the bank and entered the building and finally managed to nab the robber,” Lawngtlai SP Thomas Zodingliana said, adding Rs 11 lakh was recovered from the miscreant’s possession. He has been booked under 386 IPC and 27/2 Arms Act and has been suspended from service. Earlier, the SBI branch at Lawngtlai had been robbed in 1998 in which about Rs five crore was looted by the robbers. The larger amount of the money is yet to be recovered and the bank robbers are yet to be arrested.
