Police seized 1,720 gelatin sticks, 400 detonators and 42 pieces of fuse wire from a Dimapur-bound bus at Dhankheti in Meghalaya on Friday. Four persons identified as Lalthlein Bangpui, Lelsienthan Bongpui, Nghurhming Thanga and Ricky Keviom, who claimed to be suppliers, were arrested from the bus, police said. East Khasi Hills district superintendent of police AR Mawthoh said the huge haul of high-intensity gelatin was recovered from a Dimapur-bound bus at Dhankheti here. He said the Neo Gel 90 gelatin sticks consisting of slurry and emulsifier were of high standards, and if attached with timer devices could create a major damage. The explosives were brought from the Meghalaya’s coal-rich district of Jaintia Hills and were handed over to the arrested by one called “Mama”, he said. “We are yet to ascertain the real identities of the arrested persons, the origin of the explosives and who are the end users,” Mawthoh said. He, however, did not rule out the possibility of the explosives falling into hands of the militants outside Meghalaya. The state police had arrested a number of people from Jaintia Hills in connection with smuggling of explosives to Assam, Manipur and Nagaland. It may be mentioned that gelatin sticks are legally available in Meghalaya for blasting in coalmines and limestone quarries.
