At least four militants reportedly died and some others injured Wednesday in a gunfight between two rival militant outfits near a dam in Khoubum Valley in the interior Tamenglong district. The gunfight occurred at around 3.30 am in the forest near the dam. A highly reliable source from the Army while reporting the dead toll said that three of the slain cadres belonged to PREPAK outfit while one belonged to NSCN (IM). However, police here in Imphal and Tamenglong district headquarters are yet to confirm the casualties even though they have information of the clash. “We have the information of the clash and casualties on both sides but due to lack of communication (as the area is in the remote corner of the district bordering with Churachandpur district), the detail information could not be received,” said a police officer in the state police headquarter. Cadres of PREPAK are taking shelter in the hilly areas of Khoubum valley area since they were flushed out from Loktak lake and its surrounding areas by combined forces of Central and state security forces, according to intelligence reports. While, NSCN (IM) has been dominating the Khoubum and its adjoining areas, it added.
