The new Ao Church building at Jorhat was inaugurated and sanctified by, Executive Secretary for ABAM Rev O. Alem on Sunday in presence of several church leaders. The Church which began as a small fellowship in a thatch building with few families in 1950 had already celebrated golden jubilee nine years past.
Delivering the inaugural speech, Rev Alem said the church building was one of the explicit works in the vision and mission of Christ. While stating that human beings were created to worship God, the executive secretary pointed out that worshipping was surrendering to God and that by worshipping, humans renew their relationship with God.
Rev Alem further pointed out that worship should be beyond the four walls of the church to make the worship dynamic and in spirit. The Executive Secretary said “completion of the church building is a big achievement but more than the achievement is the life of the church.”
Rev P. Anung, Pastor of ABCD while presenting the homily interlaced the traditional and Biblical accounts of the construction of worship place. He said, “Church is a place to meet God, a place of refuge and a place of peacemaking in the world.”
Alluding to the construction of Jerusalem temple by Solomon and consecration of the same by Christ after several years opening the door for all to worship freely, Rev Anung said that the new Church building was not only for the Ao community in Jorhat or only for the people in Jorhat but a place for everyone to receive God’s blessing.
Treasurer of the Church, Nuken Ao, who was associated with the church since its inception also spoke in the function and narrated the history of the church in brief while working for the church in various capacities even serving as Pastor from 1956 to 1961 and in 1980.
