2 PULF men killed, 5 NSCN (I-M) men nabbed with arms

At least two PULF militants were killed by a combined security forces during a search and destroy mission while five NSCN (I-M) cadres including a ‘major’ of the outfit were apprehended by the Assam Rifles in separate counter insurgency operations during the last 24-hour, officials said Sunday. Arms and ammunitions were also recovered from the two slain militants as well as from the apprehended NSCN (I-M) cadres, sources added. According to sources, M-20 pistol and one 9 mm pistol with ammunitions recovered from the slain militants killed in an encounter at Awaching located at the foothill of the Baruni hill 20 km towards east from Imphal. Police said that the two militants were killed during a brief gunfight between the a group of well armed militants and a combined team of Imphal east police commandos and troops of 28 Assam Rifles yesterday at around 6.10 pm. On Sunday, identity of one of the slain men was established as Md Basir Rehman (25) son of Siraj Ahmed Hajir of Kwakta Khuman village of Bishnupur district. However, family members who turned up at RIMS morgue said that he was not from any underground faction but was residing at his sister’s home at Yairipok. Further, locals formed a JAC with regard to the killing and lodged a complaint to the state chief minister demanding justice in the killing. While an AK-56 and one 303 (M-3) rifles loaded with several rounds of ammunitions were seized from the five NSCN (I-M) cadres apprehended by the troops of Assam Rifles from Kangpat village in Ukhrul district, police sources said. Meanwhile, the five cadres of the NSCN (I-M) apprehended by the troops of the 12 Assam Rifles from Kangpat village previous night at around 0.30 am were handed over to the Chasad police station on sunday, police said. Among them one was named as ‘major’ Reison Luikham of Kangpat village and the other ‘sergeant’ Abung of Dimapur. Others were ‘privates’ named as Masitum Mung of Tangrei village, Champion Kasar of Maku village and Chinghamching of Nunglong village of Ukhrul. Quoting the statement of the Assam Rifles, police said that they were nabbed by a patrolling team of the troops of Assam Rifles posted at Kangpat village. Two activists of the KCP(MC) were also nabbed by a combined team of Imphal east police commandos and troops of 28 Assam Rifles during a cordon search operation at Kongpal under Porompat police station on Sunday at around 11 am, police said.
