Union minister flays DAN

Virtually kick-starting its election campaign for the lone parliamentary seat and four by-polls, the Congress party on Monday evening launched a scathing attack on the DAN government for allegedly failing on all fronts. Addressing the PCC joint meeting here at Congress Bhavan, Union minister for Planning, and general secretary AICC in-charge Nagaland, V. Narayanasamy accused the NPF-led government of misusing the funds provided by the Congress led UPA government. “The UPA government is aware that the funds were being misused by the Rio government and thought of stopping the flow of funds to the state, but we want to development Nagaland and we know the people are with us” said Narayanasamy, who on his first visit to Nagaland. He wanted to know where all the money had gone adding “Nobody knows except Mr. Rio.” Narayanasamy termed it as “very unfortunate” that Rio was running the government with the support of communal forces, referring it to the BJP. “When BJP is talking of Hinduva in Delhi, how Mr. Rio can support this, when the people of Nagaland are secular?” he asked and wondered how the Naga people could tolerate it. The minister also said that developmental activities in the state had totally come to a standstill, pointing out that the National Highway 39 way “very bad”. Urging upon the electorates to elect Congress nominee K. Asungba Sangtam for the Lok Sabha seat, Narayanasamy exuded confidence that Congress led–UPA government would again come to power. Admitting that the Congress leaders in the state were oscillating, the minister however said the Congress cadres at grass-root levels were intact and urged upon all to be united. Speaking in Hindi, Sanjay Bapna, secretary, AICC in –charge Nagaland charged the DAN government for failing to contain law and order in the state and maintained that the innocent citizens were the worse sufferers. Subhash Chopra, Congress MLA Delhi assembly and observer for Nagaland seat expressed regret that the Rio government had kept “mum”, when the Christians were persecuted in Orissa and Karnataka last year. NPCC President KV Pusa, Leader of opposition Chingwang Konyak also spoke briefly. Congress nominee, K. Asungba Sangtam thanked all the Congress units for endorsing his name to be the Congress candidate from the state and appealed party workers to work hard for his victory. Meanwhile the Congress party has deferred the announcement of the names of candidates for four by-polls for a day or two. Congress sources said the names were almost cleared for 41-Tizit A/C and 54th Tuensang Sadar-II A/C while the tussle for 3-Dimapur –III A/C and 17th Chizami A/C seats were still on.
