Joining hands with the rest of the world, Development Association of Nagaland (DAN), an official organization of the Catholic Church in Nagaland for social concern and development observed ‘International Women’s Day’ March 16 at its conference hall.
All together 70 women leaders, religious sisters and SHG members participated in the program. DAN director, Fr. Saji Kizhakeparambil addressing the celebration highlighted the importance of observing ‘International Women’s Day’ and to celebrate the achievements of women in different fields along with their continued struggle towards gender equality and socio-economic and political empowerment.
Speaking as chief guest, ASI women cell Dimapur, Rose Yanthan, encouraged women to be aware of their own potentials and take advantage towards women empowerment and decision making at all levels. Further, she said “if we want to change the world it is ‘we’, the women can change the world for a better place to live in.”
Others who spoke on the occasion included provincial medical mission sisters Rev. Sr. Mary Alex, and regional coordinator for gender issue of north east diocesan social forum (NEDSF), Guwahati Surabhi.
Highlighting on various issues affecting women, she pointed out how women still face gender discrimination, trafficking and low social status. In the second session that followed the inaugural function, Surabhi stressed on concept of gender equality and how women can play key roles in bringing about desirable social changes leading to gender equality and dignity to women.
Highlights of the day included a peace concert skit by peace channel members, special numbers by Xakhiqhe SHG group and Kivipu SHG group, competitions such as breaking the balloon, spoon race, and musical chair. Earlier, the programme kicked off with a prayer song by Carmel School children. The program concluded with the price distribution and a Lunch party.
